ok, i installed ubuntu on my work laptop, and I am having some issues. The most annoying is something that has happened to me before. When I try to browse the web with firefox, certain sites do not open, and links dont work.. I can go to google and pull up a search, but when I try to open the results, I get nothing.. It just sits there.. I cant even get to the mozilla homepage. Like I said, certain websites open, most do not. Any ideas?

What version of Ubuntu did you install? 7.04 or 7.10?

This happened to you before? What if anything did the issue turn out to be that time? Do you know or did it just kinda go away?

This sounds like it might be a DNS issue. Are you using DHCP and getting your DNS issue from a server on your network? Is this at home? Are you using a wireless/wired gateway router? What DNS information does it have?

What happens if you edit your /etc/resolv.conf file and comment everything out (using a #) and then add only the follwoing line:

nameserver 4.2.2.2

Does this improve things?

Let us know.

you rock.. It wouldn't let me change that file because of permissions, but I was able to change the network settings through the GUI. I added 199.2.252.10 as well as 4.2.2.2 and now everything opens perfectly. Apparently linux is picky about DNS?

I've had this issue with installing linux on vmware machines, so i figured the issue revolved around the virtual machine.

Now i just need to get my wireless drivers working. Where can i get some step by step info for installing basic stuff, ike java, flash, adobe reader, etc. to ubuntu? Seems like simple tasks like installing a firefox plug-in require hours of research.

Perhaps but think of the hours you'll save not having to reinstall your OS every 6 months because it becomes so spyware/adware riddled it crawls. Think of the $$ savings not having to purchase basic necessities like firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc...

... and as an added bonus you'll also receive free upgrades for the rest of your life.

Now how much would you pay?

Hehehehe :)

lol.. true..

ok, I have just about everything working now.. I even got my broadcom wireless card to work properly. I also managed to get wine working, with a copy of ie4linux so that I can browse pages that use activex controls.

One thing still has me stumped though. I can not for the life of me get java to install. I get an error that there is conflicting software installed. All I want to do is get java runtime environment working.
